New North starts its year with an annual welcome ceremony in Town and Gown. At this event on Move-In Day, residents are introduced to the Faculty Masters, Resident Assistants, and Residential Education Staff. Residents will learn about our signature events throughout the year and have an opportunity to meet some of their fellow residents.
Ed Wood Film Festival
New North Residential College holds an annual film festival called the Ed Wood Film Festival. Named after the film maker Ed Wood, students are challenged to making a film with an assigned theme and prop. The festival was born out of the idea that USC students could make a better film than Ed Wood in 24 hours. Ed Wood was a famous/notorious filmmaker in the 1950s who was incredibly passionate about film/cinema but created some very bad films. The top films are then shown at our annual film festival that includes celebrity judges, refreshments, and awards. Past judges have included Mark Hamil, Marlene Forte, and Fax Bahr.

Fabulous French Fry Supper Club
Every other Tuesday, Faculty Master Dr. Ethington puts on a dinner series with various speakers. Each event has a different topic ranging from spirituality to writing for the screen. Each event’s food changes based on the interests of the residents and the speakers. The one thing that doesn’t change is the consistent french fries served with every meal. These events are held in Dr. Ethington’s apartment and provides a homey feel and some new cuisine!
On every third Sunday of the month, Dr. Hancock has her Meg Brunch. Named after her college roommate Meg, these brunches provide a space for students to mingle and enjoy food from a new place in Los Angeles. Previous meals have come from Urth Cafe and Einstein’s Bagels. Each brunch as a new theme related to the time of year, such as wellness or academic advising. Dr. Hancock invites all the residents into her apartment to enjoy this Sunday brunch.
Football Away Games Viewing Parties
Faculty Master Dr. Hancock also hosts away games for USC football in her apartment. She selects a new pizza place from around the Los Angeles area while residents can come grab a slice a pizza and enjoy the game on her couch.
